This is such a great recipe for family night or a week night. I love making this recipe because I normally have most of the ingredients on hand. I also like being able to make my pizza with whole wheat flour. Making food from scratch allows you to be able to have the options of adding the ingredients that you want to add in the recipe. You can play with the different kinds of flour, you can use organic sugar, you could even use a non-dairy cheese if you wanted to, and add different kinds of meat and veggies. Although, my family prefers not to know that there is whole wheat flour in the recipe and they like it with pepperoni. 🙂
Dianna eats hers without any pepperoni (hence her piece with no pepperonis). Another reason we love making this recipe at home because it’s a great recipe that the children love helping add all the toppings to. (Quitman is helping me this time). I hope you will enjoy this recipe as much as we do! I have been using this recipe for 12 years. This is one of Dan and the children’s favorite recipes!
Take your measuring cup and 2 cups of warm water. You will test the water on the inside of your wrist like you would for a baby bottle. You do not want it to be too cold or the yeast will not grow, and you do not want it to be hot or the hot temperature will kill the yeast. Next add you sugar and yeast, and then stir.

Make sure the yeast is dissolved well by smashing some of the lumps on the side of the glass.

In a couple minutes the yeast should start foaming. This is a sign that the yeast is working.

Next add your olive oil and salt, and then stir.

I then add the liquid yeast mixture into a large bowl and then add my flour to that mixture.

If you want to use whole wheat flour, I would only use about 1 cup of whole wheat flour, and then the rest I use unbleached white flour. I normally double the recipe. So, if you’re doubling the recipe I add 2 cups of whole wheat flour and 3 cups of unbleached white flour. *Be very careful not to over-stir. Only stir enough until dough forms a soft ball. I use my hands so that I do not over-stir. Let the dough rest while you are gathering your toppings.

You can even grate fresh cheese for the top of your pizza. Sometimes, I make it in a hurry and do not allow for the rest time. Spray Pam on your pans. The pan in this picture is my absolute favorite pan! My mom bought hers in Romania when we were children, and she tells me that everything you bake is better in aluminum pans. So, she bought me this huge, round, aluminum cake pan for Christmas one year. Pour the olive oil into your hands and stretch the dough into the pan. Make a crust by pushing the edges with your fingers.

Spoon pizza sauce, then cheese, then meat, then veggies if wanted.

Cook until crust starts turning brown and cheese is melted.

Next eat pizza with a glass of sweet tea and a cesar salad. YUMMY!
